One thing is for sure – it is not the call to be the same person you were last year. It is the call to growth, to risk, to challenge. Some will ignore that call. Some will reject it outright. And some will receive it and follow. Jesus encountered all three kinds of people in His ministry.
God is the one who calls each of us to deeper commitment, stronger discipleship, greater self-denial, and resulting joy. He is also the one who supplies the ability and the fuel. That fuel is His Word and the Sacraments – the means of grace.
